The Challenge of Low HTHS Viscosity

The Challenge of Low HTHS Viscosity

The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) recently introduced new specifications for low viscosity in the J300 motor oil classification. These new specifications will help OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) meet increasingly stringent fuel economy requirements. However, this extremely low viscosity can present a number of sustainability challenges. Let us explain.

What is viscosity?

Viscosity is the fluidity and/or consistency of an oil. This fluidity and/or thickness is a result of resistance to flow. And the greater the internal resistance, the harder it is for the oil to flow smoothly. The less resistance, the better the oil flow.
